March 9, 2018

Recently, a generous deaf couple, Dr. Albert T. and Sally J. Pimentel donated the largest amount ever received by the local agency which serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing residents.

The Pimentels contributed $50,000.00 for the agency’s mortgage pay-off balance and to establish a fund for any future building needs.

Dr. Albert Pimentel has been a longtime advocate of Deaf and Hard of Hearing; he has served as Executive Director of several large national organizations and for years, in addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees of the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.   Dr. Pimentel was the first Executive Director of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and instrumental in professionalizing the work of Sign Language Interpreters across the United States.  He was also a professor in several colleges and universities, his wife; Sally Pimentel has been a teacher of Deaf children in several states for many years.

Through this gift, the Pimentels hope the community will increase its financial support to realize the Agency’s goals:  to enhance services provided to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adults, to expand the training of interpreters, to assist the thousands of citizens who are Hard of Hearing who can benefit from the acquisitions of self-help skills beyond the use of hearing aids, and to educate the local communities on the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing citizens in all areas of life.

“We are grateful to Dr. Albert and Sally Pimentel for this gift,” said Michael Schmidt, the Agency’s President of the Board of Directors.  The Pimentels have been strong supporters of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center, in addition to supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing graduate level students in several colleges and universities.  This gift showcases their generosity of helping others.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center, now known as The Sally J. Pimentel Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center, was established in Fort Myers 35 years ago.  In addition to its fund raising efforts through the years, the Agency has received grants from various sources, including the City of Cape Coral, Lee County and United Way.  The office is located at 1860 Boy Scout Dr. Suite B208 Fort Myers, 239-461-0334.  The Executive Director, Dianna Druding sincerely thanks the Pimentels for their generosity and support.
